This Gray Fox pattern carries the distinction of being the subject of debate and in the late 1970’s was the subject of a name change. Originally it was thought to belong to the Stenonema Fuscum. Subsequently named Maccaffertium Vicarium, which is now its commonly accepted name. This Grey Fox pattern yields results is in central and eastern zones in the United States, depending on your location this pattern can be used from late spring through early summer. Of note the nymphs like fast flowing water, but when it is time to emerge, they will migrate towards slower currents. 

When fishing any dry fly pattern, matching the color and the size to the hatch are critical, with presentation being the finishing touch to this trinity. Often overlooked is the casting of shadow from your leader, which may lead to spooked fish.   We suggest selecting a high float leader. Additional waterproofing can be given to you fly delaying it becoming waterlogged, by applying a flotant product such as Gink ®.
