Blue Quill Trout Dry Fly,Discount Trout Flies

This Blue Quill pattern is another excellent and essential early season pattern. It imitates a number of smaller mayflies with essential hook sizes 14-20. If those are not available, substituting them with Blue Dun dry and Blue Dun Midges can be effective. The hatch will invariably occur in large numbers and the trout will feed greedily after a hungry winter. The hatch occurs in the late morning to midafternoon.

Blue Quill’s are a smaller species of mayfly, however will be found in midstream and slightly faster runs than the Blue Winged Olive, for example. A precursor for this hatch to occur is that water temperatures have reached and maintain 50 degrees or better.

When fishing any dry fly pattern, matching the color and the size to the hatch are critical, with presentation being the finishing touch to this trinity. Often overlooked is the casting of shadow from your leader, which may lead to spooked fish.   We suggest selecting a high float leader. Additional waterproofing can be given to you fly delaying it becoming waterlogged, by applying a flotant product such as Gink ®.

All flies are tied with American sourced materials including Hareline Dubbin Materials and Whiting Farm's Hackles & Capes and are tied on premium hooks.
