X-Caddis Olive

X-Caddis Olive

This X-Caddis Olive pattern is an all season pattern. This X-Caddis Olive pattern represents the various and numerous Caddis found throughout almost all aquatic habitats. Craig Mathews is generally credited with creating this pattern. The term Caddis represents an order of insects that have over 12,000 members which also includes sedge flies or rail flies.

Closely related to the moth family, you will find this pattern can be fished nationwide around all bodies of water and is very effective when fished at dusk and late afternoon, but depending on the stream can be fished the entire day. This is a must have pattern in your fly box. This X-Caddis Olive should always be accompanied by the X-Caddis Black and the X-Caddis Tan patterns. This X- Caddis Tan fly represents the emerging Caddis that was unable to shed its shuck and whose shuck is now trailing it. As the shuck becomes waterlogged it now imprisons the emergent Caddis fly in the water’s surface. The Caddis will struggle and trout will rise to this quickly, so impart a little action on this fly and fish it in slower to moderate flows. The Trout will zone in on this easy meal.

When fishing any dry fly pattern, matching the color and the size to the hatch are critical.   Often overlooked is the casting of shadow from your leader, which may lead to spooked fish.   We suggest selecting a high float leader. Additional waterproofing can be given to your fly delaying it becoming waterlogged, by applying a flotant product such as Gink ®.

All flies are tied with American sourced materials including Hareline Dubbin Materials and Whiting Farm's Hackles & Capes and are tied on premium hooks.
