White Miller

This White Miller pattern is a mid to late summer pattern in Eastern and Mid Western regions of the USA. This White Miller pattern can imitate a number of food sources for trout, including white midges in the smallest hook sizes and predominantly the adult stage of the mayfly genus Ephoron leukon. This White Miller pattern should be fished in slower water, at around dusk and dawn. Temperature and water flow will affect the timing of this hatch quite significantly. An interesting fact about this particular mayfly is that that males emerge as light to pale duns and then a second molt occurs where they at this stage are white. The females emerge typically at dusk, and their legs are miniscule so she is trapped in the water’s film and cannot leave. As quickly as possible the males return to the stranded females and mate. The female will release her fertilized eggs and die in minutes. She never makes it out of the dun stage. Fish will feed quickly and almost in frenzy, get in on the hatch quickly as the trout will fill up quickly.     

When fishing any dry fly pattern, matching the color and the size to the hatch are critical.   Often overlooked is the casting of shadow from your leader, which may lead to spooked fish.   We suggest selecting a high float leader. Additional waterproofing can be given to your fly delaying it becoming waterlogged, by applying a flotant product such as Gink ®.
