Rough Olive

Rough Olive

This Rough Olive is another broad ranging early season pattern, but can be productive through mid-summer on many eastern rivers due to the multiple hatches that can occur through the summer. This Rough Olive pattern imitates an early season hatch of a number Baetid mayfly species. Invariably the hatch it imitates occurs from late morning, through mid-afternoon.

This Rough Olive pattern imitates smaller mayflies which find it more difficult to break the surface tension when emerging. As a consequence of this they will often find calmer, slower water to effect their hatch, which typically occur on cooler, wetter days invariably after a sustained rain shower. As a consequence water temperatures in the mid 40’s are something to look for.

When fishing any dry fly pattern, matching the color and the size to the hatch are critical.   Often overlooked is the casting of shadow from your leader, which may lead to spooked fish.   We suggest selecting a high float leader. Additional waterproofing can be given to you fly delaying it becoming waterlogged, by applying a flotant product such as Gink ®.

All flies are tied with American sourced materials including Hareline Dubbin Materials and Whiting Farm's Hackles & Capes and are tied on premium hooks.
