Camdens Baetis

This Camden’s Baetis pattern is an early season to midseason fly in the central regions of the USA and can be effective in summer months on eastern rivers. This Camden’s Baetis pattern has proven very effective when fished as a dropper under a Blue Winged Olive dry fly presentation. When fishing this as a combination set up be sure to check your depths to prevent snags. You can also fish this pattern as an Emerger as it will hang just below the water’s surface high in the water table even when there are duns on the water and they are being taken. The third use when there is little surface action is as a general searching pattern when you are attempting to locate fish, who may be feeding sub surface.

In streams or rivers, this pattern can be presented in a number of ways the most successful being a cast up stream like a dry fly and then allowing it to dead drift drag free, keep in contact with your line. Alternatively, allow the nymph to sink slowly to the bottom just above the vegetation it often seeks and slowly raise the line on the drift, through the water table to attract attention. A slight variation on this is to actually tighten up the line or pull the line as your nymph approaches the lie of a fish you are sight fishing, and this will imitate the natural movement of the nymph through the water table.
